Tim Bavington is a painter who creates rhythmic visual systems by assigning colors to musical arrangements. His paint translates guitar riffs into mathematically proportioned bars, varying in widths and colors to represent audible shifts and durations. His electric color combinations, at times interrupted by near-caustic strips of contrasting hues, are indicators of speed and temperature as well as symbols of sound. Bavington balances a systematic approach with intuitive paint handling, resulting in canvases that bridge the gap between real and synthetic, digital and analog, straight symbol and coded metaphor.
“Music is the genesis of Tim Bavington's paintings. Through synthetic polymer paint, Bavington acts as a translator between the aural and the visual as he transforms guitar solos, melodies and bass lines into vertical bands of color. Tracks from bands such as The Who, Oasis and The Rolling Stones become vibrant bands of color, and bridge compositional concepts between seemingly unlike disciplines. Although Bavington has a method that designates sound to color and composition, the paintings are not literal translations; they remain open to intuition and decision-making, allowing for a distinct artistic presence.” (from the artist’s site)
To draw a parallel between music and his art, Bavington sees his creative process as similar to how a musician transforms sheet music into a performance. "I begin with a score or transcript which, on paper at least, seems to suggest strict instructions but becomes something completely different when interpreted." Tim Bavington is a British-born, Las Vegas-based artist. He has participated in numerous solo and group shows around the world. Selected group exhibitions include Seeing Songs, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2009), Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2008), California Diaspora, Las Vegas Art Museum, Nevada, curated by Dave Hickey (2007), Extreme Abstraction, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York (2005), and Neo Painting, Young Eun Museum of Contemporary Art, Kwangu-City, Korea (2002). His work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, California.
Jack Shainman Gallery has represented Bavington since 2005. Solo exhibitions with the gallery include Recent Paintings (2005, 2009, 2013) and Up in Suze’s Room (2009).
