The Jack Shainman Gallery is proud to present Recent Paintings an exhibition of new paintings by Tim Bavington, in his debut show with the gallery.  In Recent Paintings Bavington has created a body of work that translates songs, guitar solos and riffs, into a visual language of deeply saturated color, and pairs visual pleasure with systems that reflect our coded digital world.
 
Bavington’s latest paintings advance his exploration of systems as both a generative framework and conceptual foundation for painting. Bavington, who’s previous work has explored information systems and barcodes as structuring elements for his paintings, here turns to the synesthetic dialogue between music and color in order to develop a coded, abstract structure which determines the paintings’ composition.
 
Painted with acrylic paint and spray guns on canvas, Bavington begins each work through a consideration of a song, riff, composition, and guitar solo or score searching for a parallel between the twelve-tone music scale and a twelve-hue color-chart.  For each musical work that he chooses, Bavington seeks to find a palette or architecture that reflects the tone or hue of the composition through a dozen or more studies. Once this balance has been found Bavington begins work on his large-scale, multi panel paintings, transcribing the music into bands of color.
 
Tim Bavington’s latest works, enter a dialogue on the relationship between sound and color that extends back to Newton and Goethe; and which continued through the paintings of Kandinsky and the composers of early 20th century Russia.  Contemporary neurological studies have shown synesthesia--the concept of joined perception or the fusing of separate senses--to have a factual basis that extends beyond simple metaphor. Bavington’s work arises out of this shared complex of study and experience finding parallels for sound in the regulated conceptual framework of his practice.
