EL ANATSUI /

El Anatsui has always employed modes of craftsmanship within work that has a clear and direct link to traditional African Art.  What makes the work that he is now most celebrated for so important is in the way he has been able to transcend tradition through process, materiality, and in the inclusion of an underlying and implicit social and political content integral to this material.  His work previously consisted of wood that would have been carved and painted in a manner that evoked artifacts commonly found in market places and centers throughout Africa.  Starting in the late 1990’s, El Anatsui made great changes in his working materials, as well as in his method and practice that enabled the work to jettison into a 21st Century post-modern critique on the social implications of craft and the sculptural form.
